4 yr old with recurrent fevers

4 yr old with recurrent fevers

My 4yr old daughter has been sick approximately every 4-6 weeks for the last 7 months, prior to that it was more "normal" every 3-5 months.  Anyhow here's the history: since Sept 08, she has been sick (sick right now) 10 times, Sept 10, Oct 1, Nov 30, Dec 21, Jan 3, Jan 16, Feb 28, April 12 - each time she's sick for 2 to 3 days.  Each time the main consistent symptom is fever, sometimes she complains of a headache, frequently she vomits during these episodes, sometimes has diarrhea - like I said each time is a bit different other than the fever.  Today her fever was 103.3 but generally it stays around the 101.5 - 102.5.  It changes throughout the day.  Sometimes she has a sore throat, she has very large tonsils, sometimes she has a cough.  She has tested + twice for Strep.  The doctor has run blood work and urinalysis but nothing showed up.  He thinks she may be having recurrent strep infections but the test has come back neg on some of the occassions.  I don't really agree with this has she hardly ever complains about a sore throat and although her tonsils are large, they don't appear infected.  She's been on antibiotics 5 x since September.  Initially, I was just thinking it was a virus/stomach flu etc but now I'm getting quite worried and frustrated.  We live 2 hrs from her doctor so its not that easy to take her in, plus I don't want to be a pain in the butt for the doc if its just viral.  My other concern is that she has lost weight over the last 6 months due to all the sickness, she was weighing around 38 lbs in Sept now she's back down to 35 which is only a 3lb loss but in my mind she should have gained a lb or two not lost.  When she's not having an episode she's a very healthy, active child.  Any suggestions on what could be happening would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Antibiotics aren't given for viral infections but for bacterial infections.  Most importantly BE A PAIN if need be, it is your child's health in question.  If she has been prescribed the same antibiotics over and over, that is an issue.  A person builds a tolerence to antibiotics just as they would most other medications/drugs with continual use.  The misuse of antibiotics have been creating antibiotic "superbugs".  If other antibiotics have been prescribed and as you say, fevers presist i would be concerned that there is an underlying issue.  She may have an autoimmune disorder, which requires further testing.  Please go for a second opinion.  You have been keeping a record of dates she has been sick, that is great.  If you haven't already, document everything.  Whether or not she has been around any one recently that has been sick.  Does she go to daycare?  If so, ask if anyone there is experiencing similar problems. What may seem trivial now may help to answer questions/concerns later.  Document times and dosages of meds, eating habits, what she eats/drinks, as well as cuts, scrapes, bruises and if they are slow to heal.  Not trying to scare you but just an example of possibilities that perhaps the doctor hasn't thought to test for... Autoimmune disorders, VRE, MRSA.  Both VRE and MRSA are infections. VRE are Vancomycin-resistant enterococci infections and are common.  VRE can also be resistant to other antibiotics.  MRSA is a serious antibiotic-resistant infection caused by methicillin-resistant staph aureus.  It is a VERY serious infection.  I doubt that she has either VRE or MRSA.  It is most likely something small, perhaps even a mild allergic reaction. Again, be persistant, be a bully, go to another doctor if need be.  Good luck to you and good health to yours!
