6 cm Ovarian Cyst

6 cm Ovarian Cyst

I was diagnosed with a 6.5 cm ovarian cyst on my right ovary.  I am scheduled for sx in 1 wk.  What are the odds that this will rupture before the sx?  Also, my doctor said there is a chance she may have to do an abdominal incision.  What would the cause for that be?  Is this size of cyst possibly too big for a laproscopy incision?  She also said there is a risk fo removing the cyst.  Is the size of this cyst more likely to cause the removal of the ovary?

Hi,
I'm not sure about the cyst rupturing before surgery but if your Dr feels that she cannot do what she needs to do with a laparoscopy then a laparotomy will be needed.  I'd say the risks are that she doesn't know how or where the cyst is attached.  It could be on or around the ovary and also the cyst could have compromised the ovary in some way.

I had a 4+ cyst on my right ovary and both needed to be removed.  They cyst had destroyed the ovary.  I was able to stick to the original plan with the laparoscopy.

Hope that helps.  Good luck with your surgery.  It'll be over before you know it.
