A heart rate over 100 per minute is considered abnormal, however many people seem to have high heart rates for their entire lives without harmful effects. Generally the higher heart rate is compensatory, and is the result of feedback that suggests the blood is not getting a sufficient supply of oxygen. The feedback comes primarily from two biosensors located in the left and right carotid arteries. Artheroschelotic deposits and resistance in the vascular system can be a contributing factor. Sometimes the blood vessels do not relax completely, and this is may be due to vitamin D3 deficiency. You can get a D3 level test quite inexpensively. The problem may be with the lungs, specifically the availability of surface area for oxygen exchange. To test this take a few puffs of albuterol sulfate (emergency asthma medication) and a minute or so later check your heart rate to see if it has gone down. Anemia is another good guess, and you should have your hematocrit checked. Carbon monoxide from smoking can reduce the availability of oxygen carrying red blood cells and also result in a higher heart rate.
