Chest Pain

Went for an ultrasound today and noticed strange chest pain when they had me hold my breath. It only happens when I hold my breath and I am laying on my right side, and the chest pain is about an inch to the right of my left nipple. Like a stab that intensifies the longer I hold my breath. Any thoughts?

Considering I was first mis-diagnosed with a brain tumor when my actual problem was 75% compression of my left iliac vein in my abdomin, excuse me for being a little skeptical about medical professionals. Isn't that why everyone is in these forums?

@Johnny Rocket - you're not a medical professional, stop giving people useless information!

It sounds like the pain could be related to lack of oxygen to your heart, also called angina. You should have cardiac functioning tests done, as if unchecked this could eventually lead to a heart attack. If you think about this logically, when you hold your breath and lay on your right side, less oxygen is flowing to your heart because a) you are not taking any oxygen in because you're not breathing and b) your heart is on your left side, meaning that the oxygenated blood has to travel "uphill" to get to your coronary arteries, and ultimately, your heart.

No worries. I had L5-S1 microdicscectomy surgery 3 years ago and my problems started almost exactly 1 year after that. I believe it's due to the shape of some spines that these vein compression syndromes occur. Let me know what they find if anything.

I'm definitely going to ask about it and appreciate your help. I have a herniated disc at l4 l5 and have sciatic problems so vein compression sounds like it would make sense too!

Ok I'm just trying to help. If you want to do yourself a favor get checked for this as it can greatly improve your quality of life. I doubt it's anything neurological. These vein compression sites are also caused from compression of the spine from the back which is probably pressing in nerves causing the finger curl and hip pain as well.

I'm not 100% convinced there isn't something neurological going on too - my ring finger on my left hand is always curled - I do it without noticing - it's not stiff or anything - i just always have it curled into my palm.

Yeah I have no big veins or anything - but funny you say this. I sat funny when changing my baby's diaper about 3 months ago and had an odd sensation in my left hip - kinda like I'd pinched a nerve or something, and since then I have had the weaker left leg. Wonder if I compressed a vein or something?

Yeah about 2 years ago I started getting brain fog and terrible anxiety and fatigue and difficulty breathing. All doctors found were pelvic vericose and vericocele veins. I decided to have a vericocele embolization done and immediately after my problems got worse. I started having back and leg pain and my legs felt like 2 cinder blocks. I went back to doctor and he discovered that I have May-Thurner causing pelvic congestion while performing a venogram. He then placed a stent at this location and within 24 hours all problems were gone. It's possible you don't have DVT or blood clots like me which makes it even harder for doctors to diagnose this condition. All they know about it is if you have blood clots and leg swelling but it causes so many more problems in the body that they aren't aware of. Keep in touch!

Thank you for taking the time to read about my symptoms and responding. Can I ask what your key symptoms were? And what tests led to your diagnosis?

Oh also get checked for Nutcracker Syndrome as well. These 2 conditions often happen together and could be the cause of GERD and some of your other problems. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the additional symptoms and you definetely have May-Thurner Syndrome. I have this condition and doctors kept telling me I was healthy. Finally they discovered I had about 75% compression of my left iliac vein. This is causing the leg  weakness and heaviness. The concern for this condition is blood clots traveling to the lungs causing an pulmonary embolism. The liver pain could possibly be lung pain caused by blood  clots. Have they done X-rays for clots in your legs or lungs? I would get in and get checked for this and not go back to the doctor you have as this is an obvious diagnosis and most doctors still miss it. Instead find an Interventional Radiologist that deals with May-Thurner. I had a stent placed at this site recently and almost immediately my anxiety, breathing problems, leg pain and weakness, and fatigue dissappeared. It's even possible that the digestive issues are even caused by this. Please let me know how it goes.

Oh I also has an abdominal ct scan which showed nothing. I'm wondering if legit it is just my fatty liver I am feeling? Liver issues can give false positive celiac antibodies test results. The muscle exhaustion, cramps and twitching I'm wondering could be a combo of anxiety, overweight? I was paranoid of something like ALS but I watched some videos on twitching and it is non stop and centralized. Plus my eyelids twitch and I get that when I am under stress. That pain when inhaling - I have no clue what that could be all about. Ohhhhh and missed one thing - for about 6 weeks my throat is like saliva is dripping into my wind pipe, sometimes food and makes be cough like crazy.  That mixed with the cramps and twitching made me wonder if something neurological was going on. Now, if I go to the doc and lost everything I have just written in my last 2 posts, they say it is not related and think I am crazy.

Tons of symptoms - just not sure what are all related, so I'll try to be brief. I'm on Nexium for GERD, Diovan for mild hypertension, and take the odd Lorazepam for anxiety, and am overweight. So about 2 years ago, they found I have anemia. Little over a year I also started getting crazy gas at both ends, occasional nausea, occasional spells of yellowish stools, and it always feels like I have a grapefruit by my liver. After some meals the bloating gets crazy by my liver, and sometimes accompanied with pain that wraps around the back. Doctors thought either celiac or gallbladder. I had bloodwork and scopes done and confirmed no celiac. Then I had X-rays, 2 ultrasounds, barium pass through X-ray, stomach contents emptying test, HIDA scan - all normal except they said liver was enlarged fatty. Then about 8 months later in October a rheumatologist did a ton of tests and now my celiac antibodies were at 75 and should be below 25. They redid the scopes and said it is a false positive. So from a liver area bloating, I am still having it and that is why they redid the ultrasound. The pain when inhaling has only been noticed once by me, however over tha last 6 weeks a couple of mornings I have woken up with pain under my left shoulder blade it that lasts the whole day in the same area. In addition, I've been having neurological symptoms that I am not sure are related to anxiety, my herniated disc, or something else. My legs have been weak - mainly my left. Was having extremely low grade cramping in both calves. I get twitching that does not last very long in various muscles, and my eyelids. I get these odd quiver feelings various spots on my stomach. When I stand up my legs feel like they are stiff and 500lbs until I get moving around. I'm exhausted.  So there you have it. None of my pain is excruciating by any means - I'm not falling apart and could go for a 5k walk which is why my doc thinks I am fine.

Do you have any other symptoms. Why were they checking your liver? I had abdominal scan done and couldn't see liver due to gas and I ended up getting diagnosed with May- Thurner Sydrome which can cause so many problems I the body that doctors know very little about. Some other common but rarely diagnosed conditions are Nutcracker Syndrome and Wilkie Syndrome. Just some ideas depending on what other symptoms you might have.

What were you going in for an ultrasound for? There is a vein compression syndrome called Celiac Ganglion Compression that will occur in that location. It will cause pain during heavy breathing or taking deep breaths and holding them during the ultrasound. Depending what they were looking for on the ultrasound, this condition may be related to many other vascular vein compression syndromes that are rarely diagnosed by doctors. Private message me if you want more info.
