Elevated Liver Enzymes

I recently had a general physical on a Monday after a weekend trip that involved drinking.  Everything came back good except that they noted elevated liver enzymes.  I am wondering if this could be temporary based on the drinking right before?  The recommended next steps is no alcohol for 30 days and re-test.  Is 30 days really necessary?  It seems excessive and I am very stressed out about the lack of information I received from the doctor.

Elevated liver enzymes isn't normal. It is best to get retested to be safe. I would do research on the internet on drinking and elevated enzymes and see what you come up with.

It is possible for your enzyme values to be elevated by alcohol use.. Especially if you combine the pain reliever Acetaminophen. How often you drink and how much is a very big factor; as is the consumption of large fatty meals. I can't say if this has been brought on by one weekend of drinking or if it's been a problem that has slowly been progressing. There may be another cause all together. It would be very wise not to drink alcohol until your liver enzyme values come back in the normal range. Then you should only drink in moderation if at all. Regardless of the cause, alcohol can certainly cause further liver damage. It's not worth it. Please follow the medical advise of your Physician. He/She is still evaluating your case and needs the 30 days of abstinence and the retest in order to give you a complete diagnosis before it can be explained to you.You only have one liver so try really hard.  :-)

I don't drink; however I was having a problem with elevated liver enzymes for a while and the only conclusion my P.A. could seem to some up with was that I was taking so many over-the-counter meds for headaches that this could have driven my count up.   He prescribed some meds for headaches and I slacked off on the other..... my count improved.

Actually, yes, 30 days is about the normal amount of time to get any substance completely out of your system.

I would not touch any more alcohol until the enzymes return to normal and then, I would only use it in moderation.
