Ganglion cyst

Ganglion cyst

My 8 year old daughter has a lump on the top of her.  It appears to move when she flexes.  When looking online, it seems she might have a ganglion cyst.  I am going to take her to have it looked at, but wanted to know if I should she her Pediatrician, a Ped Dermatologist or a Ped Orthopedic Doctor.

I had that and just saw my Gen. Practicioner.  She said it's caused by a lot of movement, like if you are involved in sports, etc... I am not really too athletic but tend to move my foot back and forth when I am sitting.  I have consciously made an effort to stop doing that and it has gone away.

I agree with the above poster. Take her to her Pedi Dr first. If it is a cyst then he/she will tell you what specialist to see. These cysts are not uncommon and pretty easy to remove. Take care. Remar

Sometimes they go away on their own. Mine did.

Treatment now involves aspiration of the fluid, and sometimes surgical excision.

The old treatment was to simply "smash" them with a book. Yeah. It works.

I do not vote for the pedi doctor, but vote for the dermatologist. If surgical excision is requires these people are more conscious of scarring.

I had one too; I was doing alot of physical activity/very athletic at that time.  It went away on its own after some time; I think after 3-5 months.  Have the GP check it out first.

I agree with Caregiver222, consult a Dermatologist vs Ortho if you need to.

My daughter had such a cyst at about that age. I was on her hand. Our doctor told us to smash it with a dictionary. We did. And it worked. My daughter missed it however. She like the way it moved when she used her hand.

I would not recommend smashing it with a book. You don't have a diagnosis yet and it could another type of cyst, or another problem altogether. Please let us know what the Dr says and take. Remar
