I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this question.

My girlfriend recently started using a Mirena IUD.  Is there any possiblility that I could absorb any of the released hormones from this device, during the course of sexaul activity?  I tried to ask this question on the contraception page, but I suspect because I'm a male, I was denied access to the posting portion of that forum.  Thank You.

I honestly don't know, but I suspect you're possibly right.  I say this because there are certain medications meant for men, like Avodart for enlarged prostate, that women are told not to even handle.  They say so on the commercials for this medication.  If women are told not to even handle Avodart, which would mean that it can be absorbed through the skin, I would think you may be right about the possibility of you absorbing the hormones from the IUD.  But, I suspect some doctor may refute this, although I don't know why.  I don't have to worry about being pregnant myself, but I won't take "the pill", because I don't like the idea of messing with my hormones in such an unnatural manner.  I probably do have a hormonal imbalance, but the doctor even told me that they don't know what the right mix is for me.  And, I was told by a woman with a similar background as mine that she ended up with far greater problems by using "the pill" because the hormones really messed her up.  She ended up gaining an enormous amount of weight and she ended up with worse hirsutism than she already had, which was what the doctor was attempting to correct.  It looks like I made the correct decision for myself not to take that stuff.  I don't trust anything that messes with hormones.  I do believe that you would be affected, too.
