My sister was just told that her portal vein is plugged. What kind of treatment is there?

My first effort would be a series of coffee enemas. A series being 1-2 per day for as long as it takes to get the bile flowing again. Lots of vit C also.  Look up CEs, glutathione, castor oil packs over liver, whole lemon olive oil drink,

Take 100 milligrams of Pycnogenol three times a day for two months and see if it helps
Another herbal therapy that has shown dramatic results is horse chestnut extract. A 1996 study involving more than 5,000 patients horse chestnut extract improved symptoms.

P.S. Is your sister overweight, have cirrhosis of the live or have hepatitis?

The first rule is not to delay treatment by an M.D. while pursueing various protocols involving  bat-wing serum, or eye-of-newt. Timely appropriate treatment is of the essense.

I am not diminishing the value of anecdotal suggestions to use "natural" herbs and concoctions, but there is a window of opportunity to treat this problem, and it is best to rely on your M.D. for advice in this respect. There is no evidence whatsoever that coffee enema will improve the condition.

There are various degrees of impairment.

Fortunately there are prescription medicine and surgical options. The medications seek to prevent further blockage. Herbal medications that inhibit clotting and promote blood flow such as Omega-3 fish oils are helpful. I will defer to others on the value of horse-chestnut extract. The surgical options generally involve widening the vessel, or transplantation. A lot depends on the degree of blockage and the extent of deterioration. Usually there is underlying disease and co-factors.
