Low calcium and potassium levels in blood

Low calcium and potassium levels in blood

I recently had a health check done and the doctor called me to say that everything appeared fine except for my calcium and potassium levels which were low. I have been using Gaviscon quite a bit recently (currently awaiting appointment for urea breath test to see if I have h pylori which is causing reflux). Anyway she advised me to stay off the Gaviscon for a week as this may be causing the low potassium levels. She also said that my kidney tests came back fine. Now when I look back at my diet, my calcium and potassium intake has been nowhere near the recommended daily allowance for a while now. I was wondering how long it takes to correct low calcium and potassium levels? If I start taking the recommended daily allowance for the week leading up to the second blood test, will the blood test reflect a rise in the levels or is it a gradual thing that happens over time?

How low were the levels?  Can you also provide the laboratory normal ranges please.

She didn't state how low and I never thought to ask as I'm not familiar with ranges etc. She said that they were a bit low and asked if I was taking any over the counter meds like antacids. When I told her about taking Gaviscon she asked that I refrain from taking it for a week and come back in for another blood and urine sample. She said that if the levels were normal after that there would be no need to investigate further. I was just wondering if it was a calcium or potassium deficiency, how long does it take to correct these if I change my diet?

If the levels weren't that low and following your physician's recommendations, you should see a change after a week's time.

If you take a good mineral supplement with the calcium, magnesium and potassium, you should notice a slight difference in a week, it takes about a month for a big improvement.
