Question about lice.

Question about lice.

Has anyone ever found one louse on a head and not found any eggs, nits or lice.   I found an adult louse in my hair Monday when doing my weekly check with my Robi comb.  I proceeded to do 2 full comb outs each on my two children.  Using a metal nit exterminator comb, licekiller brand products and hours of meticulous combing.  I found nothing. No eggs, no lice.  Next day my friend did the same comb out of my hair.  (took 6 hours, My hair is shoulder length) and found nothing.  Not one egg, not one nit, no lice at all.  Any ideas on how I could have gotten just one louse on my head.  (also checked hubby's hair with metal comb.)  I am positive it was a louse.  My son had them in January and my daughter last summer.  Hence the weekly checks.  I know what they look like and even checked under a good magnifier.  What do you think.  Could it have been a random male louse I got when hugging one of my friends?

There are no "random louse" that I know of.  If you are infected it will definitely be LICE plural.  If you want to play it safe you can use whatever product you used before on the children.

or

Maybe it was not and something else?

Yes and no. Without actual evidence of lice on the children I would not be using "whatever product you used before". All of the products that kill lice are very poisonous and should only be used when absolutely necessary. I had had the misfortune of getting lice from a homeless person I brought to the hospital years ago and it definitely was one of the more unpleasant experiences in my life.

The probability is there may be an infestation, but lacking good evidence, use the doctrine of the reasonable and prudent person.
