Son with enlarged neck node for over 1 year was finally referred to a surgeon, why?

So My title pretty much sums it up. My 4 year old son has had an enlarged lymph node in his neck close to 1 year now. It has been treated with 3 rounds of antibiotics over this time frame and I even have a second doctor now who says its no big deal. I am not overreacting I know that lymph nodes swell to fight infection, im no dummy. This one has gone down its about 1/2 inch now but never has gone away. I called the doctor today to ask for shot records for pre-school I mentioned his node was still there (last check up was april on it) his nurse gave me the number to a surgeon and said I need to make an appt with him. Why would I be reffered to a surgeon, can he evaluate it diffrently than my famlily doctor before deciding to remove it? No tests besides blood has ever been done on the lump. Is this over doing it, or a good idea, should I go see an ent first? I really do not want surgery unless absolutly needed.

Hi Winter~I would take him to a different doctor. They should do a biopsy on the lump before they make any decisions on surgery.

I don't blame you for not wanting surgery, I feel everything possible should be done before that step.
