Trying to remember something traumatic

I have an important event coming up and I have to remember what happened... My councilor told me that when something traumatic happens sometimes your mind pushes it away so you dont remember details as a coping mechanism, and that maybe months or years down the road, I will remember everything whether I want to or not... But the thing is, no matter how much I read my statment, I can't remember the details from three months ago... I have to remember somehow... Any ideas?

Hmmm.. I am not sure what "event" is coming up that you'd need to relive this bad, past experience but do you remember where it happened?  Perhaps (if it is even possible for you to do) going back to the place where it happened would help you remember?  I know it usually works for me when I go start to do something, then forget what I was going to do, I go back to where I told myself to do that thing and a lot of times I remember.  

If you can't remember where it happened, can you remember someone who was there or what you were wearing or anything like that?  Again, I think if you were with someone or wearing a certain outfit and you wore the outfit or hung out with &/or talked to the person who was there, you might get more clues.  

I am sorry that you have a traumatic experience in the first place but you are not alone.  I wonder if I have some buried ones myself as I was with an abusive guy for 2 years when I was younger.  Good luck!
