What is the name of the gland underneath your left jawbone called?

what is the name of the gland underneath my left jawbone? It swells and lately it stays swollen for a longer time. I've often had this problem but it seems to have gotten worse. I need some insight into what is the cause of this.

Swollen lymph glands:

Most likely you have an infection of some sort.  No need to panic because this can be a good sign.  No always but it most likely means your body has identified it and is working to get rid of it.  The lymph nodes, in layman terms, collect the bad stuff (bacteria, etc.) and present it to the good stuff (white blood cells).  You should be fine, if this persists for two weeks or more, go see a doctor.  Vitamin C will most likely help you.

You may have a stone in your sub-mandibular salivary gland. This would be all the more likely if the swelling was associated with eating certain foods. Usually these stones can be "milked" out and you should not need surgery.

Hopefully that's one of your lymph nodes, we've lots of them.  They're the collection points for the body's infection efforts, and they'll swell up when you're fighting an infection (such as in your jawbone / teeth roots or gums).  Have you had a dental checkup lately?

If you're a smoker (or live / work with one), it might be something else worthy of your doctor checking out.
