What should I do for my sprained thumb

What should I do for my sprained thumb

I was teaching swim lessons, this girl jumped in she grabbed my thumb and bent it back pretty good when trying to catch herself. I had it checked last week and the doctor said if its not better in a week that I should visit an orthopedic surgeon. I have had a brace on keeping it stable and a wrap around it also. I can move it around a bit more than before but it stioll hurts to touch around the joint and the entire thumb and even palm is really stiff. It doesn't seem much better. Should I get it looked at or is this just normal?

If nothing is broken, then a sprain can take a few weeks to months to heal.  Using a splint for a month may allow it to heal properly.  But take the advice of your doctor because it might not be just a simple sprain.
