You need to be very careful with tea tree oil. Read the instructions, as I don't think that you should apply it neat to the skin.
You can purchase some antifungal creams without a prescription from the pharmacy if you cannot afford to see your doctor. The pharmacist will be able to advise you by looking at the problem skin and suggest the appropriate cream. The doctor is the best choice though.
Should you find that the skin starts to erupt, weep, crust over and start weeping and is sore, this is impetigo. This is contagious and you would need an antibiotic cream from your doctor. Also do not share towels, cutlery, pillows, etc.
Thank you so much! I thought it could possibly be that. I bought tree oil soap which was supposed to fight off fungus and it came in yesterday. When I applied it, kind of burned at first and seemed like it was fighting it because it looked different. The area turned blackish
It sounds like you may have a fungal infection.
Do not scratch the area. It will just make it worse and also damage the skin.
As you have had this problem for quite some time, make an appointment to see your doctor so that you can get a prescription for the appropriate medication. You may need an antibacterial cream or one that has antifungal properties in it as well.
As a home remedy you can apply natural set yogurt or honey to the problem area.
