what does a high bun blood test indicate?
An high BUN indicates the kidneys are not filtering/working as they should. The causes can be numerous why they are not filtering/working properly.
High BUN level numbers can mean different things; these are some of the most common things:
Kidneys aren't working correctly, from disease, inflammation, or blockages.
Medicine such as corticosteroids or antibiotics are causing a false high value or masking normal results.
Acute kidney failure due to shock.
High protein diets where there is too much protein entering the body.
Gastrointestinal bleeds or GI bleeds.
Addison's disease present in the patient.
High BUN to creatinine ratio results can be from:
Extreme dehydration.
Urinary tract blockages.
GI (gastrointestinal) or respiratory bleed in the body.
