bruised rib

I have been having pain in my rib cage just below my left arm. I am not sure how I got it. The only thing I can think of is
I had a coughing spell last week when I was sick with a cold, and I might have bruised it that way. Otherwise I really don't know.

I gets worse at night and seems less during the day. How can I treat this?
