My 80 year old father had a colonoscopy one week ago. He went to the emergency room presenting with a descended abdomen, severe bloody bowel movements averaging every 3 hours or so for the past 36 hours. He was admitted to the hospital and was taken off his blood thinner, plavix and received an x-ray and EKG. He is not receving antibiotics or IV therapy. I'm concerned that his symptoms are not being taken seriously. He's told a hemmoroid may be bleeding. He is filling the toliet with blood and diarrhea. Aren't these symptoms a sign of a perforated bowel?
Thanks - it's always good to know you're not the onlyone!

Abdominal cramps and watery discharge may indicate a Post surgical complication of Colonoscopy. They actually are very common in many compromised patients even though adequate care has been taken. They include mild abdominal pain with cramps, watery diarrhea,Post surgical inflammation. These are very minor complications.Very severe major complications can be Bowel explosion, obstruction, allergy, dehydration or even stroke sometimes.Regarding your patient, report to your Doctor if he has been hospitalized after surgery.Medications are prescribed basing on the symptoms you stated. There is nothing much to be worried. It is your responsibility to mention any other severe symptoms may arise.
