falls & bruising

Hello All...my father, he's a rather young 69 year old, recently fell in the bathtub, about of week after the fall, needless to say, a black & blue appeared on his thigh area.  He states it painful & is walking w/ a bit of a limp.  The other day, it became swollen in that area, if you took your hand & cupped it about 3/4 of the way around is the size of the swollen area.  I am just concerned, I never saw an area bruise & then bump like that before & wondering if this sounds weird?  Thank you for your time.
