Gas in the eyes can cause damage to the eyes, so it is not a recommended method of cleaning out dirt. I am sure that comment was stated "tongue-in-cheek". That being said most people get gasoline splashed in their faces at least once or twice in a lifetime and there should be no harmful residual effects. Rinsing and flushing the eyes with copious quantities of water immediately and then soap and water for the face (not the eyes) is the most reasonable treatment.
My boyfriend works on cars and he said just use cold water, and he also said gas in eyes will clean dirt an grim out of eyes.
