Hi Nickii11,
It sounds like you have repetitive strain injury. I would report it to your supervisor right away because the expect you to report it within about 48 hours or as soon as possible. They will send you to a workmans comp doctor to evaluate it. You may have carpal tunnel from overworking it. They usually give you a brace, tell you to ice the area, and give you an NSAID like Ibupropin, and have you rest it for two weeks or give you modified duty. They are required to pay you while you are on workmans comp. and pay for the doctor of their choice. I went through all this with my employer and you really have to be firm on making sure you don't go back to doing the same thing. You have quite a few rights. They may do a nerve conductivity test if it continues. This tells them if there is nerve damage. They can give you a cortisone injection if that is what they determine will help but you need rest and if you ice the area be sure to wrap a towel around the ice so you won't burn your skin. You may not actually want to take the Ibupropin until you see the doctor because it will mask the symptoms and the swelling may go down and the doctor won't be able to diagnose you. Just please report it and get to the doctor that the HR department will give you. I have carpal tunnel in my left wrist and tendonitis in my right thumb. Both hands were numb at night (for months) and tingling in the day time. They can give you electrophoresis and help calm the inflammation down wth massage etc. let me know if you have any questions or need more help.

This is NOT normal. Sounds like nerve irritation/inflammation related to this activity. The numbness should subside. However, if it is not gone in 24-48 hours I would seek medical attention.
I would not do any heavy activity with this hand. Try taking an anti-inflammatory, i.e. Motrin/Ibuprofen.
