vaginal itching during menstration

At the onset of my period I suffered frm extreme itching and burning pain. Thought it was thrush so treated it with 1 off dose of fluconazole 150mg and canestan cream 2%. But this bought no relief. The bleeding continued to cause burning and itching.  I have a mirena coil and am on HRT so low oestrogen shouldnt be a problem. Iam not sexally active and would like to know if thrush can be resistant to the oral medications what action should I take now?. I am also diabetic but have good control.

I am a part time nurse assistant at my local GUM clinic and let me firstly reassure you that this is a common concern of many women. Secondly, some Oral medications esp antibiotics can make thrush symptoms worse and therefore some creams may not have any effect, I would discuss this with you GP. In the meantime I can recommend Clotrimazole cream 1%, this is a good cream for tackling thrush and other microbial infections which we offer to people with irritated skin at the clinic. Im sure you can get it at the pharmacy. Some times the blood itself can irritate the skin and quite often no thrush or infections are found with conditions like this. If you are not sexually active its most likely just irritated skin. Good luck.
