Asking about severe abdominal pain

I am inquiring from a physician on the forum about severe abdominal pain with normal CAT scan and lab studies.

My son is 25-years-old and currently hospitalized with severe abdominal pain.  In the ER, CT scan showed enlarged stomach and slight thickening of intestine walls.  They placed an NG tube for decompression of the stomach.

My question is can severe pancreatitis sometimes only be diagnosed by ERCP or MRCP?  My son has drank alcohol heavily in the past 5 years, as well.
