Weird episode day after surgery whats the reason?

My fiancee had laparoscopic surgery friday to remove his gallbladder. He did great and urinated after with no issues. But he had no urge to pee 4 to 6 hours after and only could go about 1/2 a cup. They tried to put a Foley catheter in him before he went home but it wouldnt go thru. But since he had peed some he was abke to leave. I did have to place a catheter in him the following evening and using a smaller catheter he did great. It went in with no issues. In the middle of the night he woke up cold and shakying uncontrolable that it scared me . He didnt have a temp though. Thus went on for about 10 to 15 minutes. He went back to sleeo after he calmed down. But what was that? What would  make him do that? Any answers would help. Also when I take the cath out what should i do if ue still cant pee? Leave it back in or go to ER?? HELP!
