Factor v Leidon

Factor v Leidon

I have Factor V Leidon diagnosed a few years ago after i flew from the UK to Menorca. I was taking a birth control pill which was to help with my skin and spots i had got a DVT.

After this i got pregnant and had to terminate. I was told then (2 years later) that i had factor 5 Leidon.

I then got pregnant a year or so later and decided to continue with pregnancy, i had to inject everyday to thin my blood so that the placenta didnt clot.

I was told that i had got this from my parents, so they were tested including my sisters but none of them had any clotting problems or have anything in blood to say where i had got it from.

Any help as i am confused as to where or how i have it and can it be passed onto my child who has special needs and are in the middle of trying to find out what condition she has.

Factor V Leiden is caused by a specific mutation called Arg506Gln in the F5 gene.

Factor V Leiden is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. The risk of developing a clot in a blood vessel depends on whether a person inherits one or two copies of the Factor V Leiden mutation from their parents. In the general population, the risk of developing an abnormal blood clot is about 1 in 1,000 people per year. Inheriting one copy of the F5 gene mutation (from one parent) increases that risk to 4 to 8 in 1,000. People who inherit two copies of the mutation (one from each parent) may have a risk as high as 80 in 1,000.

We hope this information is helpful. Regarding your daughter's special needs, she may benefit from meeting with a medical geneticist for evaluation. A medical geneticist can be found at the American College of Medical Genetics website.
