I hope that this information is helpful to you.  Having one copy of the HLA – B27 allele causes an increased risk to develop ankylosing spondylitis, a form of chronic inflammation of the spine and of particular joints in the spine.  It can also cause problems with the eyes called Iritis.   In addition to HLA-B27, there are most likely other genetic and environmental factors associated with this condition.   The chance of developing ankylosing spondylitis with one positive HLA B27 allele is 43%.  You should talk with your doctor about the results of the test.  It is important to keep in mind that most people with a copy of the HLA-B27 allele never go on to develop any symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis.
