Hereditary neuropathy--can it start with me?

After an extremely-stressful meeting in March, 1986, the next morning I experienced the beginning of extreme pain and many years later numbness in my feet and much more recently my left thigh.  Mayo Clinic diagnosed me with a rare hereditary neuropathy.  Could my neuropathy have started then so that since I already had my children, it will start with me and end with me?  Or can they possibly expect to get it too?  Thanks for your opinion.
