Born with no enamel on teeth

I am interested in finding out if anyone has had the same experiences as me. I was born with no enamel on my teeth. This has went as far back as the 1700s in my family. The first child is always born with no enamel (as meantioned earlier we can trace this back to are Irish roots in the 1700's. We have straight, strong teeth but we have no nerves. I was told as a child that I couldn't do anything until my adult teeth were fully grown which occurs when you around 18 years old. At that time I spend hours and hours in the dentist office capping my teeth. My son was born with this disorder so i guess it just hit home with me because I don't want him to go through all of the issues that I have faced (such as low self esteem and people thinking that you didn't take care of your teeth). Anyways, I want to know if there is a known cause for this? Where did it come from and why is it the first born always is born with no enamel and sometimes the second child, but not always. Any information or experiences would help me greatly.
   Thank you!!

I had the same problem along with my sister and brother. It was passed from my mom. She was the only one out of 4 sisters that had it. I passed it to my older son. My daughter and younger son don’t have it. I was bullied my whole childhood. When I was in my 30’s. I had all my teeth removed. Best thing that ever happened. I still have night mares.

Hello, i'm Stephanie i'm 36 i'm the youngest and I have the same problem as well as my dad and my daughter. I didn't wan't her to have to go through what i did, so i started taking her to the dentist at 2 years old she is now 14 and her teeth look great, the dentist helped build her teeth up by bonding them to help keep them stronger. she looks like she has regular teeth except there short. i had to get dentures because when growing up they didn't know what to do. Now a lot of dentist's are going back to school to learn about it and to have better solutions.

My brother is 15 years old.  Kids call him bubba.  Insurance won't pay to fix them because they said it is cosmetic.   Clearly it's genetic. We have talked to lawyers.. but have gotten no where. We entered him in a smile makeover contest. The worst teeth with the most Luke's on facebook won.  He won.  We drove 2 hours to the dental office.  They said there wasn't anything they could do.  How do we get help?

I am 40 and have the same thing.  I have a sister and mother that have it also and my son.  I have two boys and their baby teeth were and are perfect.  They appear white but if you look they aren't glossy with that enamel look.  My oldest son's permanent teeth are now all in and he's teeth are yellowed and spotted just like mine were growing up.  Unfortunately there is not a permanent fix until you stop growing at about 18.  I was in my 30's when I had full cosmetic dentistry done on my teeth consisting of crowns and veneers.  My son and I also have extremely sensitive teeth.  From all my dental work we found that my nerves in my teeth also never receded like they typically should when you become an adult.  Eating cold foods hurts, whitening hurts, etc..  The only thing that I have found to help with trying to whiten my teeth and my son's is walnut powder.  I also have him brush with whitening toothpaste at least once daily and walnut powder as needed.  Consistent applications of fluoride can help with the sensitivity issues available at your dentist.  Walnut Powder I found at an herbal shop, but I'm sure you can find it online.  I have a small jar and it has lasted us 10 years plus.  It only takes a little.  It's a very fine powder and if your worried about it being abrasive, why? you already don't have enamel and I have yet to see any visible defects from using it.  To note that when you can get cosmetic dentistry done that you can end up with root canals due to the sensitive nerves in your teeth.  It can be very pricing, but it is all very worth it.  I love my smile now, but I do hate that my son is having to deal with this.  Like I said the walnut powder, whitening tooth pastes and fluoride helps.  I've been there and I'm there again!  I hope this helps someone! Best of luck!

I was also born with no enamel on my teeth.  I had most of my teeth capped when I was young, then my permenant teeth grew in.  I remember my dentist wanted to paint my teeth.  As an adult, I have a few porcelain fillings, mild gingivitis, and whiten my teeth like everyone else.  You don't have to suffer from being born with no enamel.  I still have the scars from when I had my teeth capped, and will probably never forget the way a spoon tasted (if you had capped teeth, you'll understand), but otherwise it's a far off memory and I grew up like everyone else.  Just take care of your teeth and visit dentists regularly, they'll help you out tons.

If you know a child born without enamel, seek dental advising.  They'll know what to do and give you support on how to manage the situation.  Sometimes life throws us lemons.
