My Chances of Twins

by Oly1970, Jan 28, 2008 02:00PM
I have a question. I am 37 years old and 5 weeks pregnant. My questions is what are my chances of havng twins? My Aunt (my moms younger sister) has a set of twins and my husbands younger sister has twins.

Thank you

Thank you for your question.  Having monozygotic (identical) twins is not typically something that runs in families.  However, having dizygotic (fraternal) twins does run in families and happens more frequently after the second pregnancy.   If your Aunt’s twins are dizygotic, then your chance of having twins may be increased compared to someone without any family history of dizygotic twins.  A history of twins on your husband’s side of the family should not increase your chances of having twins.

Thank you for your response. My Aunt did have dizygotic twins and this would be my 8th pregnancy. I had 4 miscarriages and have 3 living children now.

To: dr
my grandfather was of a twin, what are the chances of the next generations having twins?

So far, two generations have passed with nobody having twins, will it show up in the next generation? is there a hereditary gene so twins are born, or how does that work?

thank you for your time and efforts...
