Polycythemia vera

by lov2laf, Mar 29, 2008 08:23PM
Technically polycythemia vera is likely a disease of over accumulation rather then over production. RBC mass is increased and often platelets and whites are increased. With treatment you should live a normal or close to normal lifespan. If male, keep your HCT 42/14 not 45 and female 38/12. Hydroxyurea, interferon, P-32 and the new JAK2 inhibitors now in clinical trial are available. Many go conservatively with just phlebotomy for years on end.

Please remember that I am not a physician. Always check with your hematologist if you have questions, and if he or she is not available, discuss your concerns with the oncology nurse.
