Question on meaning of genetic testing results

by WorriedMom15, May 06, 2009 11:12AM
My daughter recently had a genetic workup for blood clotting disorders.
She is Heterozygous for Factor V Leiden and also has low Free Protein S. I understand these two conditions but I do not know what these others genetic factor mean if anything.

She is heterozygous for 4G/5G  and Homozygous for HPA-la gene and does not possess the mutation T to C at position 1565 on either copy.

Thanks for your help

Hi,

I don't know how it all works but the low protein s means you are more likely to develop a blood clot and the lupus anticoagulant also makes you more prone to clot. It does not mean you are more likely to develop lupus, it was just named lupus anticoagulant. So you have 2 genes that will make you a higher risk than normal to develop a blood clot.
I hope this helps!

Thanks!!

Im furious right now.... My Dr. decided not to put me on any meds just folic acid even after testing positive for blood clotting!!!  He thinks my clotting is not too bad and with just the folic acid should be sufficient... Im not very happy right now. ( I have had 2 miscarriages back to back)

If I were you, I would go to another Dr. for a second opinion. My sister-in-law had numerous miscarriages and when they finally figured out she had a blood clotting disorder, they put her on Heparin and she had delivered twins, full term, with no problems throughout the pregnancy. Maybe try to find a Dr. that specializes more in blood clotting disorders and pregnancy.
Good Luck and I hope you are able to find some answers!!!
