Would the cause of congenital bilateral ptosis show in a muscle biopsy sample taken from the thigh muscle?

Hi,
How are you? The cause of congenital ptosis is often unclear. However, ptosis   is said to be due to improper development or dystrophy of the levator muscle or due to hereditary factors. Surgery may be done with   a small strap of human tissue or synthetic material is threaded to suspend the eyelid from the forehead muscle. The most commonly used tissue  is fascia lata located in an area of the human body adjacent to the thigh muscle, known as the ilio-tibial tract. A biopsy sample from the thigh muscle, as you mentioned, would not show the cause of the congenital ptosis. But it may have been done in connection to the surgery treatment, Take care and regards.

Dear dr santos thank you for your reply. I am curious to know if a muscle sample from other muscles such as the thigh would show the cause of my ptosis (which i presume is congenital- it was diagnosed when i was about 3months old but not when i was born) as i have worsening muscle problems and an EMG showing a myopathy of proximal, distal and ocular muscles.
Therefore i wanted to know if the ptosis could be/is linked to my other muscle symptoms and myopathy on EMG and thus the cause would therefore show in a muscle biopsy from the thigh?
many thanks

hi,i have just come across your post, and my daughter has ptosis, but she also has a syrinx in her lower spine, she to had a muscle biopsy done from her upper thigh and it was to rule out any sort of muscle disease.as the consultants didnt think she had.it turned out she also had a rare centronuclear myopathy..although what my daughters circumstances are totally different i can relate to what you are going through. i too began to panic over what and how this would affect her. it isnt just cut and dry. there are so many forms of muscle problems and myopathies that can affect so many people in totally different ways. my daughter has to have sleep studies to monitor her breathing muscles but its been several years now and thank god there is no change. doctors cant tell me whats going to happen as such as its so rare...im sorry i cant be of more help.but i do with all my heart know how  you are feeling.keep pushing for answers, and learn as best you can just soley of the condition, the internet can take you everywhere and you can panic.i know first hand, thats what i did. i hope you find what your looking for and if you need to talk,il be here. sorry i couldnt be of any help, but your not alone, god bless x
