Bleeding After Sexual Intercourse
Hi Doctor, I am 34 yrs old, have 3 healthy boys (vaginal births).Youngest is 22 months. I stopped taking the birth control pill in June 2009 (my husband had a vasectomy). Since then I have experienced mostly right sided "ovary" pain (in that area), usually felt mid-month, but also sometimes during my period. I have had the odd time where sex felt uncomfortable/painful (mostly felt right side). This only happened a few times and then sex felt fine again. Recently though, after sex, there has been fresh blood..on the sheets, and on him...and it has freaked me out a bit. This has happened the last 3 or 4 times after we've had sex. In 2000/2001 I did have an abnormal pap smear result(abnormal cells) but my doctor just monitored it with frequent paps and ever since I had all normal paps, the last one done in February 2009. I am on aspirin 325 mg daily due to recently having had surgery to repair an atrial septal defect that was only found this year. The closure was done with a device in July 2009. I have never had any other "female" problems. My most recent blood work was normal. I see my doctor next week, however woud like your opinion. No one in my family has had gyn issues/cancer. I am worried about cancer, can normal pap smears (cells) in feb change so quickly? What could be going on? I am in good health and weight is normal, so is blood pressure. Thank you

I'm sorry to take so long to reply--I actually did reply almost two weeks ago, but the connection must have failed because I see its not here--again, sorry!
By now, you have probably seen your MD and have some answers.
If you were my patient, I would first do a pelvic exam and pap smear. I would especially be looking for a polyp on the cervix. I think that is much more likely ( and benign ) than abnormal cervical cells. I would also do a pap of course. And a pregnancy test (I ALWAYS do that even after vas ). I would then do cultures and a wet mount to rule out infection in the cervix--such as yeast, BV, etc.
And, finally, an ultrasound of the uterus to check the lining for any polyps or thickening there.
If all of the above was normal/negative, I would probably suggest 10-14 days of progesterone therapy and observation.
