HRT What type

HRT What type

I am 9 weeks post op for vag hysterectomy, with 1 ovary left in.  I am almost 50 and the last 2 weeks have been hell for me.  I am experiencing all of the menopause signs.  Not so much hot flashes (very mild and only in night occassionally), but the depression is unbearable,  I cannot get through a day without crying at the moment and feel total despair and overwelming feelings of dread. Originally I was to have both ovarys removed, but because of the way the ovary was situated the surgeon said it was too dangerous to remove. He said that I would't need HRT as I had the ovary, but the chances are it could stop working sooner rather than later due to age and op.  I do believe this has happened.  Can you tell me what type if any of HRT I can request from my GP.  I was originally going to have Oestrogen patches (if both ovary's removed).  Please Help I am desperate.
Many thanks

Hello,

Supplemental estrogen comes in many types of preparations from pills to patches to vaginal suppositories/creams.  Discuss your symptoms with your GP, discuss the risks/benefits of this type of treatment (especially with regard to cardiovascular events, bone health, and breast cancer risk) and taking note of your specific risks.  Also talk about the how long you might be on the hormones.  All of this will be very individualized, so what's right for you may be very different than what a friend or relative experiences.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
