Normal Pap but HPV Positive?

Normal Pap but HPV Positive?

Hello Dr!

In 1997, I had an abnormal pap that resulted in a coloscopy. I returned six months later and tested normal. Since then I have had normal pap tests all these years but discovered this last time (Dec, 2010) from the nurse that even though my pap test was normal I tested positive for HPV. Is this something I should be worried about? The nurse didn't seem concerned one bit and from reading the forums and such it seems as though this virus is really common. I am due to go back in six months as a precaution.

Over the last two years, I have only had two partners. Is it possible the strain from '97 remained dormant and flared up again or that I possibly contracted another strain since it seems that you never really rid of the virus?

The other thing I noticed is that a week before I get my period, a small pink flat mark shows up on my inner thigh. It doesn't itch but has a light brown middle. It goes away after I am done menstruating. Is this one of the characteristics of HPV?

Thanks so much for your time and the layered questions!

Hi!
It is typical of the virus to persist in your system.  In this case, it seems that it is not doing any harm by being there -- not causing any dysplasia, and that is why we follow paps.  It could be the strain from 1997 OR a new strain; either is quite possible.  As for the mark on your thigh, probably not hpv related, but watch carefully for any changes in size or color, just as you would for any other mole or wart.
Good luck!
