PCOS

im 20 years old n ive been having irregular period problem for the past 8 years.after i got my first period(i was 12 then),i did not get my period for two years.when i was 14,i started losing dramatic amount of weight,n i was getting my period for almost 6 months but they wud last for more than two weeks n they were really heavy.but after 6 months, evthing stopped n i was gaining weight.when i turnd 15,my mum decided to tk me to another gynae,n she sed i was having hormonal imbalance n suggested me to take diane 35 for two months apart from asking me to do some physical activities.i got my period for two months continuously,n started reducing weight.after i stopped diane 35,i did not get my period at all.frustrated,i chose not to consult a doctor.i chose to wait but no progress at all.when i was 17,i started going to the gym n two months later after losing about 3 kgs,i got my period..n that was it.i only got it for a month,n despite exercising,i did not get my period the following months..after joining college(i was 18 at this time),i became busy n couldnt keep up with my exercising.a year later(i was 19),i consulted a endocrinologist n after blood test and scanning,he confirmed that i was having PCOS.he prescibed glucophage for a month n asked me to watch my diet n exercise regularly.i followed his advice n started losing weight, two months later i got my period n that was it for that year.demotivated,i gradually stopped everything..this year,i decided to start exercising n two months later (as usual) i got my period, which was actually exactly a year after i got my last period n nothing after that.was feeling really depressed and consulted another gynae and she has now put me on diane 35 all over again.its really frustrating and depressing.i started diane 35 five days ago.since i was 12,ive been struggling with severe hair loss problem, exessive hair growth on my face and neck and body,n acne problem n of course, massive weight gain.

Hi!
If you were my patient, I would encourage you to continue BOTH glucophage and Diane 35. It is possible that if you could lose weight and maintain weight loss that your cycles would resume spontaneously.  It is also possible that they wouldn't.  Diane will help with hair growth and acne as well as regulate your cycles.  If you don't have at least 4 periods per year, (approx every 3 months) you will be at risk for cancer of the endometrium (uterine lining).  So in summary, if you were my patient, I would encourage all of your medications AND your weight loss program.
Good luck!
Dr B
