Pregnancy or cancer?

I have always had irregular periods, skipping about a month at a time. My last one started on November 25th and lasted 4 days (which is normal for me). After my last period my husband and I didn't have sexual intercourse until January 1st. On Jan 24 I thought I was going to start, I had the normal brown blood. Then it went away. I took a pregnancy test on the 28th and it was negative. Later that day I had more brown so I put a tampon in. When I took the tampon out it looked like there was mud it, then the brown went away again. I took another pregnancy test Feb 1st that was also neg, the same I had more brown that went away. On Feb 5th I had red blood then it went away. On Feb 8th I jogged on a treadmill for half an hour and after I had some pink blood. I keep thinking I am going to start my period but then it goes away. I have never skipped for this long. It sounds to me like I am pregnant but I didn't have intercourse with my husband for a whole month in November, plus the negative pregnancy tests. I have been kind of moody and have had little short headaches. But, not really any sickness or constipation. Could there be something else wrong with me? Could I have cancer or something?

Hello,

I think you need to be examined.  Nothing you report is that alarming, but to help sort things out a pregnancy blood test will be helpful.  And an exam will help determine the source of your bleeding.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

I have had a similar thing going on myself.  I am 30 years old and have two children.  A couple of weeks ago I began my period at the normal time, however, the bleeding was more like brownish discharge at first and then turned into light bleeding later in the day.  By that evening, it had stopped all together.  I had also begun to have some itching around my vaginal opening and thought I had probably gotten a yeast infection from all of the antibiotics I had been on for chronic bronchitis.  The next day I began to have some problems urinating and some incontinence.  All of these things together began to worry me.  I had never had a period shorter than three days in my life!  I know I am not pregnant because my husband had a vasectomy three years ago.  I haven't been on birth control since then.  I called my doctor and he had me come in for an exam.  They checked my urine and it came back fine, then they did a pregnancy test which was ofcourse negative.  He also did a pap smear and vaginal exam.  I haven't gotten the results back from the papsmear.  He said that there were no signs of vaginal infection or irritation that he could see, but he put me on a probiotic anyway to build up my "good" bacteria.  I began spotting a little and severely cramping after the exam and throughout the night.  The itching went away the next day and my urination went back to normal.  It is now two weeks later and I have been having some heavy discharge for the last couple of days.  It started out clear/whitish streaked with brown.  I just went to the bathroom a little bit ago though, and it is now streaked with bright red blood.  I am having a little bit of cramping in my abdomen and my lower back hurts a little.  I have never experienced any of this before, and I am completely baffled.  I don't know if I should call my doctor again or just wait for my pap results to come back.  Did you ever get any resolution with your problem?
