Right Ovary Cysts

Right Ovary Cysts

46 yr old and right ovary has a 8cm mass all the way around and I have two fibroids in the uterus, one at 5cm and one at 3cm. Left ovary appears fine. CA125 is normal.  Doctor is recommending TAH w/RSO possible LSO.  TAH bec not sure what the mass is?  Interestingly, I have no pain and periods are regular.  Does this appear to be the best course of action?  He thinks it could be dermoid cyst in the ovary.  My concern is losing the uterus but I understand the right ovary needs to go.  Thanks

Hello,

Whether you have your uterus removed is entirely up to you.  Another course of action may be an RSO via mini-laparotomy or laparoscopy, obtain intra-op frozen pathology, and if negative you're done.  If it returned positive then proceed with a TAH/BSO and staging performed by a gyn oncologist.

One thing to note is that intra-op frozen pathology can be falsely negative (this varies by institution), so one must wait for the final pathology results to have a definitive diagnosis.

Continue to discuss this with your gyn and don't hesitate to obtain a second opinion (this forum is not sufficient).

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
