i am 20. i have never been pregnant and been on a relationship for 2 years. My boyfriend is my first and only partner. I'm also his first and only partner. about a month ago i;ve started to experience bleeding after sexual intercourses. The first day and the last day of my period have very dark color. i have regular vaginal discharge. Besides these, i have no other symtoms, but the bleeding after sex continues. I tried to make an appointment with my doctor but it will be another 2 weeks untill the appointment time and i 'm really worried right now. Thank you very much for your help
Hello,
Sometimes menstrual irregularities can be a sign of a woman's entry into perimenopause or in your case may be due to your diagnosis of PCOS. Both circumstances result in a woman not ovulating (the ovaries not producing an egg) monthly which can lead to spells of irregular bleeding. Also, as women age, they may develop polyps within the uterine cavity that can cause abnormal bleeding, or disturbances of the thyroid hormones that can cause irregular bleeding. Most concerning in a woman with irregular menses is the possibility of cancer forming in the uterus causing irregular bleeding. if your bleeding is not menses related (e.g., coming from a cervical or vaginal source, an exam will help identify that).
It sounds like your gynecologist has already started the work up. An endometrial biopsy or dilation and curettage will give them the same information. Bleeding shouldn't interfere with sampling the endometrium (inside layer of the uterus). They'll want to make sure you are not pregnant or severely anemic from the bleeding you have been experiencing, check for possible abnormalities with your thyroid hormone, assess your uterus for structural changes such as fibroids or polyps (as you noted), and if you are approximately 35y/o or older, perform an endometrial biopsy (as previously discussed) to look for abnormal cells. Once all of this is done and the results are back you may have the answer to your question.
And no, the UTI is not related to your menstrual bleeding.
Best regards,
Dr. Downing
I forgot to mention: I am 21 years old, never been pregnant. My problems only started in March 2007. I have been to many doctors and even the hosiptal. All sonograms have been normal and blood tests only show that I have Poly Cystic Ovarian Symdrom [PCOS]
