If you have a fishy smell, particularly after sexual intercourse, that is the number one sign of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV).  The doctors can diagnose it on the spot by taking a smear and looking under the microscope at it.  BV is treatable with antibiotics prescribed by a health care provider. Two different antibiotics are recommended as treatment for BV: metronidazole or clindamycin.  I had two rounds of the metronidazole pills and besides making me feel sick, they didn't work, so my ob/gyn gave me the vaginal metronidazole and it worked like a charm and didn't make me sick.  My ob/gyn said to make sure my boyfriend was washing before sex.  Frankly, I just followed him, found out he was cheating and dumped him -- apparently my body doesn't appreciate the bacteria from other women. And to the other ladies talking about pain - pain is not a normal symptom.  If you have pain, you need to be checked by an ob/gyn, not just for a pap smear but you need a pelvic exam.  Pain can be caused by cysts, endometriosis, adenomyosis, kidney infection, bladder infection, diverticulosis, tubal pregancy, etc. All those conditions have pain in the front and/or back around the pelvic region. Please don't diagnose yourself. It could be nothing or it could be serious and waiting could cause worse problems for you if it is not treated early.  Much worse problems. Please take care of yourselves.  I care.

well you could have bv without anysx. but if you want him to be checked out you can it is up to you i had been witht the same partner and use to have recuurent bacterial infection. and he didint get treated and i went back again and i didnt have it and still dont have it when i go to the doctori dont use antibacetial soap just to make sure she can get an accurate swab. but if you have bv then get the test. but it isnt an std at all.

well bv isnt an std and if your discharge doesnt smell like fish after sex or when ever after period and it doesnt itch or make scratch then you might not have but some women have bv and dont have any sx. i would say go to gyn and get a pap smear to double check i went to get a pap smear some months back and the ob gyn did my pap smear and looked under the micro. and told me she ididnt smell anythingf and she didint see anything under the micro. she told me i mightjust be sweating down ther which i was all the time . but i use dial anticbacterila soap but not when i went to ob. for my appointment. goodluck ladies. maybe you cna go back to the doctor to do another pap smear if still nothing then maybe you might have tio use an antibacetial soap. like dial

I am 18 and have had an excessive amount of discharge since 10th grade. I thought that i had a STD but i continually go to my OBGYN and they give me the swab/pap and say that i dont have anything. But i have always smelled a fishy smell from time to time. I havent had any partners with std's and i always stay on top of my appointments but i get the same response...
it is white with a sometimes strong odor.
It recently just came back and my bf had went "down there" can he get sick? is there any hope for me?

From what everyone is saying, I'm really starting to wonder whether I have Bacterial Vaginosis. I did a little "researching"online and found out if you wait too long when you have BV [Bacterial Vaginosis] that it can cause a woman to get Pelvic Inflammatory Disease [PID]. You can have minor to no symptoms at all when you have PID. Also, you can become infertil if you wait too long to get help/checked for it.  Here's a few symptoms of PID:
  1. pain in your lower abdomen/pelvis
  2. vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor
  3. irregular menstrual bleeding
  4. pain during intercourse
  5. lower back pain
  6. fever/fatigue/diarrhea/vomitting
  7. painful/difficulty urinating
I got this information from www.mayoclinic.com if anyone wishes to take a look themself.

From this information, I must say I have the back pains, some vaginal discharge [though it doesn't smell as horrid as everyone else has said] that is slightly white, and sometimes during intercourse it does become uncomfortable. Does that sound like I have anything serious or something normal? This is the first time I've actually been this sexually active. About 2 years ago I had a yeast infection, not sure if that has to do with anything though. I had one boyfriend at the beginning of 2007 and he would touch me 'down there'; since then I think I've been having problems. My current boyfriend is/was a virgin, so he shouldn't have given me an STD to my knowledge; also, we use condoms for the most part. I have never been to a Gynecologist before, therefor I have never had anything checked in that area nor have I had a pap smear, though I need to soon. Now, does anyone think I have BV or PID? And should I tell my boyfriend to get checked, too? I am about to be 20 years old.

Also, does the yogurt-on-a-tampon thing really work?

I'm 19 and have been feeling under the weather.  I am not sexually active.  I have been having a lot of pressure around my vaginal area and some discharge too and a foul odor. It's not painful but is uncomfortable.  I drink a lot of water. It's been about 2 days since I've been feeling like this.  I don't wear tampons only pads 'cause I see a comment up there about wearing one dipped in yogurt...ew...no not for me.  It doesn't itch it just hurts.  Is there hope for me?

vagisil will upset the normal ph balance of the vagina. no women should use any feminine hygiene products. try to use dial antibacterial soap until you can get to the ob/gyn. you might have a bacterial vaginosis which is an infection. it is caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria and isnt a std. even virgin get bacterial vaginosis. or you try a tampon dipped in yogurt but you should go and get a pap smear as soon as possible. those are sysmtpoms of bacterial infection. or could be a yeast infection. try using a warm bath with epsom salt to draw the infection out to relieve the itch.
goodluck hope i helped a little.

(I just typed a whole story to you and lost it!!!!)  Anyway Fly, I have the same problem that you do.  I do and did see my OB/GYN  for it.  He diagnosed it as BV and we've tried several pills (the sulfur disgusting!) and even told me to use a blow dryer to stop some of the moisture with a little Monistat.  My problem goes and comes, it could be months, then, BAMM, there it is.  I have never been so overwhelmed by anything in my life.  Working with the public and working so close with co-workers and subordinates doesn't help anything either.  I need help too, I was even wondering if I needed something removed.  Hmmm.

I, too, have a boyfriend who is accepting it.  I know it has turned him off a few times, but he says he understands and he still loves me.  I am trying to eat a better diet, so I will be trying the yogurt more and hope that that helps my problem.  I have just never had the idea that something had crawled up into my insides and died!  Whew, the smell, the smell!!!! I get the small bit of light yellow discharge, with the HUGE smell.  Even though it is embarrasing, I sometimes but a tampon on so it can hold the smell it, that depressing.  I have a real problem feeling like a WOMAN, when I can't be free to go about my daily life without being bogged down with such a burden.

I just read about Enzara.  It looks like it's over the counter.  It SAYS that it doesn't have any side-effects(???), and doesn't promote vaginal dryness.  I wonder.  I'm going to  give my doctor a call and ask about this.  Something has to give, cause I'm drained by this satanic thing that just won't go away!  Talk about FRUSTRATION!

No i dint say he wanted to leave but its just that the smell annoys me and at times i get to think that the smell really gets to him more than it does to me.  A friend of mine who is also a Pharcist once gave me some pills to inject but it didnt work these days i am bathing with cold water but still the smell is still there.  I was thinking of going for a pap test but its going to take me long to get the money but i have to sacrifice thanks for your advice guys i really appreciate it at times its good to talk to someone about these issues as you would get stressed trying to figure out the solution

I don't know what to tell you about your med. problem... I'd go see a doc asap. But I would like to say that if your husband is telling you he's gonna leave you because of this I'd let him go and say buh bye, because love should be unconditional especially in a marriage! If he makes you feel this insecure about your marriage than hes not worth it. I know this isn't what you wrote about, but I've been married for 3 years and theres nothing that will make us fall apart. We have complete trust, I never question if we are going to make it... we just are because we communicate, and solve problems together.... I don't know... I'm sorry if I'm outta line... But emotional pain can be just as deadly as any illness.

Hello,

I suggest you see your ob/gyn to be evaluated for this odor.  Bacterial vaginosis is a common culprit as honey1982 notes below.  But an exam and evaluation of the vaginal vault will be very helpful.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

has he told you he would leave. and is the smell like fishy, and the discharge white or watery. is it a lot. does it smell like ammonia if so then you need to go to the doc and get pap test for bacterial vaginoisis it isnt a std it is a infection cause by an overgrowth of bacteria. you vaginal ph is off balance. try to drink mor e water only take showers only use antibacterial soap such as dial, eat yogurt , and stop having sex until you get the pap test the doc will give you metronidazole(flagyl) or metro-gel to treat the infection. but all of the above metnioned things can keep the infection from coming back. and never ****** or use feminine hyg. products i used to get recurrent bv. infection and now i dont and i am still witrh the same guy that ui was with when i used to get the infections. stay away from pastry and sugary foods. dont take hot baths because you will be sitting in dirty hot water which is a breeding ground for bacteria. whicjh breed in dark hot moist places. well good luck keep me posted.
