Thickened uterine lining tx options

I am 50 yrs old, perimenopausal.  Have been having heavy bleediing off and on for one yr.  This last bout has been for 10weeks with extremely heavy, heavy bleeding.  Have tried birth control pills and Provera.  They just did a intravaginal ultrasound and said I had a small marble size fibroid, an enlarged uterus and the lining was 18mm thick, even after 10weeks of heavy bleeding.  Am now anemic.  They are concerned about possible uterine cancer, they are wanting to do D&C with biopsy.  They said this would not be a guarantee to stop the heavy bleeding/pain.  They wanted to know if I would rather just go ahead with hysterectomy.  I'm hesitating about this, not sure why.  Would I be just as well off going with the hysterectomy under the circumstances or starting slow and trying the D&C first at my age.  Am otherwise healthy except for mild lupus and RA.  Thank you!
