Uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids

I am 55 years old.  I am still menstruating, although, now my periods have become erratic.  I have 3 orange sized fibroids which distend from within causing my stomach to look a little odd.  While I haven't experienced any pain,
I am wondering if I should have a hysterectomy because of the ongoing bleeding I have when I have my periods.
I'm getting disgusted with this condition and am having a hard time deciding what to do.  I am seeing my doctor soon.  Any suggestions or recommendations?

Hi!  Only you can decide what's best ultimately, but I can tell you that when my patients have ultimately reached the point that they have decided to "go for it", They have been OVERJOYED with thier results and new freedom from discomfort and bleeding.

With fibroids that size you certainly have an indication for surgery.  The persistant bleeding would worry me somewhat, and I would probably try to talk my patient into an office endometrial biopsy--a sampling of the uterine lining.

One other thing to consider if it is available in your area is Uterine Artery Embolization.
In this procedure they go and put gel foam plugs into the arteries that are the blood supply for the uterus and fibroids.  There is no incision.  There is some pain as the fibroids start to shrink, but usually not more than you would typically experience after surgery.

I can tell you that MOST of my patients would want something done--enough is enough!

Good Luck!
