Vaginal Infection

Hello! I really hope someone can help. I went to the doctor yesterday and they did a wet prep and results are in, but they never called back and may not till tomorrow! I'm so stressed over this.

Last Wedesday, I went to the GYN to discuss some minor itching I tend to have around my period. I had no odor or discharge. She didn't do an exam, but prescribed three days of Diflucan and suggested I take one at the onset of each period. I took the Diflucan that day, Thursday, and Friday as directed. Saturday I bought some Acidophilus capsules, two billion live cultures each. I took one Saturday and didn't notice anything. Sunday morning I took it and felt a burn near my labia majora, on the panty line. I didn't see any redness there, but I chalked it up to friction. I took another one on Monday, then felt burning and heat in my labia minora after I got to work. It wasn't terrible, but certainly noticeable. I made a Tuesday appointment with my primary care doc, then got home, took off my jeans and panties and walked around the house in a skirt. The labia looked a bit red. The burning resolved in a couple of hours.

I got to the doc yesterday and told her the story. She inserted the speculum kind of roughly and it HURT, right at the opening. She took the swab and sent it to the lab. They were supposed to call me back and never did. She is not in today, so I may not know anything till tomorrow! I have seen the lab results, but don't know how to interpret. It shows bacteria (don't know what kind), white blood cells, and epithelial cells. It didn't say anything about pH.

Any clues as to what this can be? I'm SOOOOO stressed and the waiting is so aggravating! Oh, and I'm 31 years old, if that helps at all.

Thank you!!

Hi!
If you were my patient, I would advise you that if you have already taken the Diflucan, the wet mount probably did not show yeast.  Bacteria could be lactobacillus (good bacteria) or Gardnarella (bad bacteria) or something else altogether.  I am assuming that you took the acidophillus by mouth, but if you inserted capsules vaginally, it could have caused an allergic reaction.
One other possibility to consider is herpes which can present this way, although unusual.
I would suggest that you call your doctor and at least speak with the nurse--don't just wait around!
Good luck!

Thank you, doctor! I realized after I posted the message that I left out a couple of things -- I did stop taking the acidophilus (yes, they were oral capsules) and I haven't felt the burning since, though I'm still a little sore around the opening. And you're right -- the test results didn't show any yeast, just the unnamed bacteria, white blood cells, and epithelial cells. I did try to call the doctor's office, but the nurse wouldn't tell me anything -- just that the doctor would call me back. I STILL haven't heard anything and it's so frustrating! I just want to get this treated and over with.

For what it's worth, I had folliculitis in the vaginal area last month -- that was cultured and negative for herpes.

Thank you for the reply!
