complex ovarian cyst with daughter cyst

complex ovarian cyst with daughter cyst

I have had some pelvic pain with some abdominal discomfort.  I had a pelvic ultrasound and a right ovarian cyst with daughter cyst was found measuring 3.5x2.5x2.8cm.  There was also free fluid in right adnexa.  I also have a mirena iud in for 6 months.  My gyn. suggests I go on birth control pills for 3 months then come back for an ultrasound.  I am nervous that this cyst is more than a cyst because of the term "complex".  Are these type of cysts common and should I be concerned with this being a mass rather than a cyst or a malignancy?  Also does complex mean some part of the cyst is solid?  I have been having some stomach problems thought to be from augmentin, I had a scope and was told it is gastritis.  Can this be caused from the cyst and is it possible the Mirena Iud could cause the cyst?  35 years old.  THank you

Hello,

Neither your medication or the IUD is related to your cyst.  Complex does not mean solid.  When the radiologist sees solid components they report them as such.  The size and description of your cyst requires a follow up ultrasound, but it is not alarming.  If you were my patient I'd skip the birth control pill and simply repeat the ultrasound in about 6-8 weeks within days of the onset of your menses.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
