haven't gotten my period

haven't gotten my period

Its been 41 days since my last period.  I am 22 have had pretty normal periods.  I normally go longer then the 28 day cycle but not this long.  I have taken a home pregnancy test and it was negative.  Just wondering if I should be concerned.  My weight hasn't changed and I haven't been eatting differently or any new changes.

Hi!
It sounds like you may have a mild case of polycysitic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
This is VERY common, and tends to cause irregular prolonged cycles.

I ALWAYS recommend repeating the pregnancy test, and then if that is negative, I would most likely prescribe 5 days of progesterone.  This should start your period within 2 -3 weeks.

In most cases, I like to get some basic hormone levels such as thyroid studies, prolactin level, FSH and LH.  Then, how I would treat the irregular periods depends upon my patient's goals --If she wants a baby, I would prescribe Femara to help her ovulate.  If she DOESN'T want a baby, I would recommend oral contraceptives to regulate the cycle.  It is also OK to take progesterone monthly or when the period is long overdue.

The important thing is not to wait more than 3 months between periods.

I hope this is helpful!

Good luck!
