never ending period

I had a child about 7 months ago and I got my first period 3 months after I had the baby. I've been bleeding non stop since I had my period. I took birth control for 1 month and I stopped bleeding but as soon as that birth control pack finished I got my period and I haven't stopped bleeding since. It feels like I only stop bleeding when I'm on birth control. Is there something wrong with me? It's very heavy bleeding and I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not?

Hi!
If you were my patient, I would ask you to come in for an ultrasound of the uterus.  I would want to rule out any retained tissue within the uterus.  I have seen tiny pieces of placenta or membrane cause major problems.

I would also run some tests to rule out infection as endometritis can also cause bleeding.

If nothing was found, I would recommend continuing birth control or other hormonal therapy for awhile -- not indefinitely.
