vaginal air during pilates

vaginal air during pilates

When I go to pilates class some positions and exercises introduce air into my vagina and then forcefully push it out, so it sounds like flatulence. I've had 3 kids so is my introitus permanently wider? It's very embarrassing. Is there some sort of exercise to help prevent this from happening? Kegels?

Hello,

Yes, Kegel's will help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles allowing greater control of the symptoms you describe.  Certainly, after a vaginal delivery a women's introitus widens.  If this is bothersome to you in other ways (e.g., interferes with intercourse, or trapping water in the vagina with bathing), and doesn't improve with Kegels, you should consider seeing a urogynecologist for possible surgical revision.

For Kegel's to be effective you should contract the muscles used to stop urine flow.  The contraction should be held for 5 seconds 10-12 times each set, and do three sets during the day.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
