vaginal hysterectomy, colds

I am due to have vaginal hysterectomy (anterior and possible posterior repair) in 4 days, but I seem to be getting the initial onset of a cold. I phoned the surgeon's office and asked if the cold gets worse, whether the surgery will still take place. They said "yes". I would like to get your opinion on this. My thinking is that when a person has a cold, her immune system will not be as good and may jeopardize the recovery etc. I live in Canada and the wait time for a surgery is very long. If I miss this time, I may have to wait for a long time for my next turn. Thank you in advance.

Hello,

You are having elective surgery.  Whether to proceed with surgery will be up to you, your surgeon and the anesthesiologist.  If you are feeling very poorly then you should defer the surgery.  If you are better and the rest of the surgical team is comfortable with proceeding then you have your answer.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
