Hello my name is Debbie
I am a mother of three children ages 22,19 and 7.When I was 23 years old I had a uterin suspension. Two weeks later I became very ill and found out I had peritonitis. The Dr.poked holes in my intestines while doing the suspension.I ended up with a colonostomy for a year.I have also had treatment for endometriosis prior to the suspension.
In 1999 I had a kidney infection and a stint was put in for a few days.I also have a thyroid goiter.
Ok that is my background now here is what is currently going on.
I have had a ultrasound pelvis transabdominal and transvaginal test done 6/3/2009.It shows that my right ovary reaches 3.9 cm and the left 4.3 cmin diameter.volume on right 8.0 left 11.8cc minimal adnexal fluid. In the right ovary is a 5-6 mm echogenic shadowing supportive of calcium .
T he left overy a 1.8 cm dominate follicle is apparent .
Now the ct scan dated 6-26-09
This scan was done before and after the administration of 20cc of iv multihance gabolinium.
Findings
A cyst of the left ovary is again observed now reaches 3.7 cn in diameter, previously 1.8 cm.
In the right adnexal region an elongated low signal structure is observedthat has entirely defferent characteristics than that of the left ovary.markedly low signal on both T1 AND T2-weighting supports a calcified focus of much larger than that suggested by ultrasound..
What do you think
Does this seem serious?
Thank you so much for your time

Hi!
It is very lucky that the peritonitis did not cause scar tissue and prevent you from having your children!
If my patient had similar findings on an ultrasound and CT scan, I would suspect a dermoid cyst (teratoma). This is a benign ovarian cyst that many times contains calcium.
In fact they can contain actual teeth or bones.  They usually need to be surgically removed because they won't go away on their own.  However they are extremely unlikely to be malignant.
It is a little difficult for me to interpret the results without seeing the images, so I could be entirely off base.  It will be very important for you to discuss the results with your MD.
Be certain that your MD knows your entire background too.  If you do need surgery again, there may be some scarring around the uterus and tubes.
Good luck!
