Hi Pat,

I'm 44 and my period has become irregular also. If it makes you feel any better, I've had my period and/or spotting Since Feb. 14th with a day or two here and there without anything..meaning no spotting or something that looked like a period.
My FSH test came back normal but my dr. did tell me ahead of time that could happen ( that the test could come back normal but be in perimenopause). I had an ultrasound done to rule out fibroids as the reason for the "abnormal bleeding" and I go for an endometrial biopsy in another week and a half but my dr. thinks everything is probably fine.
The endometrial biopsy is just precautionary because my lining is thick (1 cm). I do have a cyst on my right ovary but we'll watch it to see if it goes away in a couple of periods. NO fibroids though!

I'm a proponent of Hysterectomy & oophrectomy (ovaries).Your parts are shutting down anyway, you aren" using them for anything, like babies so get rid of them. The longer they hang around the more likely something's going to go wrong. Like cancer, uterin, ovarian, cervical, fallopian...tumors, fibroids, endometiosis,, shall I go on?

One doc told me I was a nerve case & needed to learn to relax, surgery not neccessary, not going to kill me. Next dr said quality of life is whwt makes it neccessary. To not be out of commission days at at time each minth, to have more energy than I"d had in years, to be able to go places & do things & know I would feel well & not have to cancil at the last minute because of pain to get life back. In my case part of my right ovary was left so I wouldn't go through sudden menopause. Opps, ovarian cancer in 2005. Feb 15 I was rushed to ER, Gone into my brain now, 4 tumors & my abdomin (abdomen) is full of cancer again too, now it's just a short time till I leave for the great beyond. Talk to your gyn abou t surgery to get rid of thie unneccissary parts & protect you from developing greater problems. By the way some people think it changes your sex life, only in your head, sex doesn't involve your uterus or ovaries, duh.

Jo A,

My heart goes out to you. I don't know what to say....but I wanted to at least respond to your post.

I'm still bleeding, since Feb 14th, (read post above). My "period" actually started on March 13th and got heavier last week with a few clots. When the dr. called me with my ultrasound results I forgot to ask her what kind of cyst I have on my right ovary. I did get a copy of the ultrasound report (from radiology) and it says the cyst is within my right ovary and it says it's anechoic. I'm assuming anechoic is a functional cyst. I go for my endometrial biopsy this Wed.

I know how it is to have long periods. I have been on my period since Dec. 30th 2006 till present. I have had maybe a total of a week without bleeding since then. I have gone to see many obgyn's and my family doctor and they can not figure out what the problem is. I have been on hormone and birth control pills of many kinds and nothing has worked that long. I have thought about a hystorectomy(?) but none of the obgyn's will do it cause I am 100lbs over weight and they say its more of a risk. I am at my rope's end with all of this and its causing my depression to get worse then what it was. I am so sorry for all the women that have longer periods and know what its like with the heavy bleeding and clotting. I wish you the best and everyone else that has this problem.

Endometrial biopsy results: well my results came back as my having simple hyperplasia without atypia. We're going to treat it with provera ( a generic brand) for 3 months and then do a follow-up biopsy. I scheduled the follow-up for the beginning of July. I have my period now, I just got it a few days ago and this time it's pretty heavy. The good news about the hyperplasia is it's benign so it isn't considered precancerous.
